Lewis Koumas has been backed to develop into a regular Liverpool starter and eclipse his father’s career, according to former Liverpool striker Dean Saunders.
Koumas, 21, has featured five times in seven games under Andoni Iraola after being told he would not go out on loan again this season. Saunders, who coached Koumas’s father Jason at international level, told the Liverpool Echo: “He’s already played at a higher level than his dad, which shows what a brilliant player Lewis is. Lewis has an infectious enthusiasm when he plays football, and he’s a handful for defenders.”
The Wales international started against Portugal on Thursday in a Nations League game and impressed despite his side’s 1-0 defeat. Neco Williams, the former Liverpool full-back, also praised Koumas’s development, saying: “His confidence is growing each game. What I see with him is he’s improving all the time. He’s a work horse, he doesn’t stop working.”
Saunders added that Koumas must establish himself as a starter at Anfield to progress, with his versatility across the frontline potentially useful as cover for Alexander Isak, who has rediscovered form after a difficult first season.
