Collymore: Klopp’s Germany role could unlock Wirtz at Liverpool

Former Liverpool striker Stan Collymore reckons Jurgen Klopp’s role as Germany manager could help Florian Wirtz rebuild his confidence at Anfield, despite Klopp no longer being in the Liverpool dugout.

Collymore saw Wirtz score and captain Germany in recent Nations League matches and believes the mentorship and arm-around-the-shoulder approach Klopp is known for could have a significant impact on the midfielder’s form at club level. “Despite him not being his club manager, Jurgen Klopp will probably be the man that has the biggest impact on his Liverpool form because of him putting an arm around him in a Germany shirt,” Collymore told Actionnetwork.com.

Wirtz has struggled since his £116m move, scoring just once in six appearances across the Premier League and Champions League this season. Collymore suggested international football, where players have breaks from week-to-week pressure, could help him regain form: “If Wirtz translates that into a Liverpool shirt, then he can start to rebuild his confidence.”

Collymore was more cautious about long-term prospects, saying it will be “difficult barring a miracle” for Wirtz and fellow big-money signing Alexander Isak to hit the heights of Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland. “But that doesn’t mean they can’t massively add to what Liverpool are trying to do, which is to win Premier Leagues and win European Cups,” he said.
