Ronald Araujo says Liverpool has given him what he needed to reignite his career after a difficult spell with Barcelona and Uruguay. Speaking while on international duty, the Uruguayan defender praised the club, teammates and coaching staff for making him feel at home from his arrival in August.
“From the first moment I arrived, they made me feel very at ease,” Araujo told AUFTV. “The team-mates, the coaching staff and obviously the fans, they made me feel at home from the start. That helps. It gives you confidence to perform on the pitch and give your all.”
He has featured in all seven of Andoni Iraola’s matches so far and established himself as the manager’s first-choice right-back. Last season at Barcelona was marked by a month-long mental health break following intense criticism, while injury also ruled him out of Uruguay’s World Cup campaign.
Araujo said he simply wanted to enjoy playing football again rather than prove anything to anyone. “I simply enjoy playing football,” he said. “I now have the continuity I was looking for and I know what I am capable of as a player when I have that continuity and that confidence.”
He also opened up on the frustration of missing another World Cup through injury, after also being unavailable for 2022. “It hurts me, it hurts me,” he said of missing the tournament again.
