Roy Keane has criticised Eberechi Eze for his performances during England’s Nations League matches, saying the Arsenal player needs to cut out loose moments in possession to earn more game time.
Keane, speaking on ITV, singled out Eze’s display against Croatia as particularly disappointing. “I thought he was really sloppy with some of his play,” he said. “When you get opportunities, you’ve got to take them.” He urged Eze to “bring your A-game” and embrace the competition for places at both club and country, rather than shying away from it.
Ian Wright, his fellow ITV pundit, defended Eze’s style but agreed he needs to sharpen up. “He’s an amazing player,” Wright said, “but he just needs to tighten everything up a bit. If you’re sloppy and you’re playing with that languid kind of style, then it can look worse than it is.”
Eze, 28, has featured more for England during this international break than he has in the Champions League and Premier League combined this season, despite not starting in the opening fixture against Spain.
