John Aldridge believes Cody Gakpo was fortunate his proposed move to Manchester City did not materialise in the final days of the summer transfer window.
The former Liverpool striker wrote in the Liverpool Echo that the Dutch winger “has dodged a bullet” by remaining at Anfield. City had bid £80m for Gakpo as Liverpool pursued the signing of Bradley Barcola, but the Reds rejected the offer.
Aldridge’s assessment comes after Manchester City were found guilty of 114 charges of breaching Premier League financial rules. If the club face relegation or severe punishment, a “fire sale” of their squad appears inevitable, leaving any new signing in an uncertain position.
“How would it have felt for the Dutch winger if he’d gone to the Sky Blues and, within a few short months, being left to either play in a lower division or swiftly pack his bags again for a move elsewhere?” Aldridge wrote.
Gakpo is unlikely to feature in the fixture between the sides on Sunday owing to an injury sustained on international duty.
