Jeremy Jacquet could not hide his joy when told of Zinedine Zidane’s verdict on his France debut. The Liverpool defender impressed in the 1-1 draw with Italy on Friday night, just four days after his first cap in a 1-0 win over Belgium.
Zidane told reporters: “Very good. Very, very good. Brave. He wasn’t afraid to come out a long way. Very good in the duels. He was, once again, very good. I said it four times.” When informed of the praise, the 21-year-old said he was “very happy” to hear it from such an iconic figure.
French outlet L’Équipe described Jacquet’s performance as “dazzling”. He completed two interceptions, two clearances and won four duels against Italy, with his aggressive pressing instructed by Zidane to win the ball back high up the pitch. Jacquet told reporters he felt no pressure and was “just playing my football”.
The £60 million signing has already established himself as Virgil van Dijk’s partner in Liverpool’s defence this season, starting every Premier League match under Andoni Iraola.
